Data sources and methodology
Lician stores the data it shows in its own database and refreshes it on fixed schedules. This page lists each source, how often it is refreshed and how the figures we derive from it are computed. A missing figure is shown as a dash, never as zero.
Sources and refresh schedule
Times are UTC. A scheduled run can skip when the database is busy; the next run picks up the work.
| Data | Source | Refresh |
|---|---|---|
| Financial statements (income, balance sheet, cash flow) | SEC EDGAR XBRL company facts from 10-K and 10-Q filings | A rolling sweep every 2 hours plus a pass every 6 hours. A company someone opens that is not yet cached is queued and the queue is worked every 15 minutes. |
| Filings (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K and others) | SEC EDGAR filing index and RSS feeds | New filings are checked every 5 minutes; 8-K filings are synced every 6 hours and the filing feeds are re-read daily at 04:00 UTC. |
| Stock prices | EODHD (batch quotes), with Yahoo Finance as the fallback for tickers EODHD does not return | Twice an hour during the US session (13:10 to 20:40 UTC, Monday to Friday), in batches of tickers, and every 6 hours. |
| Earnings dates, EPS and revenue estimates and actuals | EODHD earnings calendar | Every 6 hours. |
| Analyst estimates | Yahoo Finance analysis pages | Weekdays at 14:10 UTC and every 6 hours. |
| Insider trades | SEC Form 4 filings on EDGAR | Every 6 hours and daily at 04:00 UTC. |
| Institutional holdings | SEC Form 13F-HR information tables on EDGAR | Weekdays at 08:40 UTC and daily at 04:00 UTC, a few recent filers per run. |
| Short volume | FINRA daily Reg SHO short sale volume files | Weekdays at 21:20 UTC (last 10 days) and every 6 hours. |
| Market news | EODHD news feed | Every 15 minutes. |
Prices: “At close” and “Delayed”
Prices are not real-time and are never labeled live. Each quote carries the time it was stored, and the label follows that time:
- Delayed · as of 10:15 AM ET: the quote was stored during the regular US session (9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, weekdays), so it lags the market by up to the time since the last price sync.
- At close · Sep 29, 2026: the quote was stored outside the regular session, so it is the closing price of the named trading day.
A quote without a stored time shows no label.
Financial statements
Income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements are parsed from the XBRL data companies file with the SEC (US-GAAP tags). Annual figures come from 10-K filings and quarterly figures from 10-Q filings; each figure keeps its fiscal period. We do not estimate or fill in figures a company did not report.
Earnings: beat, miss or met
A beat or miss always compares an actual with an estimate on the same basis, both from the earnings calendar: reported EPS against the EPS estimate, and reported revenue against the revenue estimate (when the calendar has no revenue actual, the revenue from the SEC filing is used).
- Surprise = actual minus estimate; the percentage is that difference divided by the absolute estimate.
- Equal values are “met”. A zero estimate gets no percentage.
- Each quarter from a 10-Q is matched to the first earnings report within 75 days after its period end. Fiscal fourth quarters are reported in the 10-K, so they appear as calendar reports.
- The diluted GAAP EPS from the filing is shown next to it but is not used for beat or miss: estimates are usually quoted on an adjusted basis.
Insider buying and selling
Insider flow counts only open-market purchases (Form 4 code P) and open-market sales (code S) over the last 90 days. Grants, option exercises, gifts, tax withholding and other codes are left out of the buy and sell totals. One insider’s lines with the same code on the same day count as one trade, and net value is buy value minus sell value.
Institutional ownership (13F)
Managers with more than $100 million in reportable US equities file Form 13F-HR once a quarter, up to 45 days after the quarter ends. A 13F therefore shows positions as of the quarter end, not today, and lists long positions only.
Lician reads recently published 13F filings a few filers at a time and caches the filers it has processed, so a company’s holder list covers the cached filers, not every manager. Quarter-over-quarter changes appear only when the prior quarter of the same filer is cached. See also the 13F guide.
AI chat
Chat answers are written by Qwen3 30B, an open-weight model, running on Cloudflare Workers AI. The model looks up figures through tools that read Lician’s data, and it is instructed to give each number with its date or period and to say when data is missing. It can still be wrong: check important figures against the filing or the data pages before you rely on them.
